Security Officers Meet On Kashmir, NSA Doval Present: 10 Updates

Srinagar:  Home minister Rajnath Singh is holding a second high level meeting of the day on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir -- where 23 people have died in violent protests since the death of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani on Friday. The meeting is being attended by senior security officials, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Union minister Arun Jaitley, sources said.
Rajnath Singh telephoned Congress president Sonia Gandhi and National Conference leader and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah, discussing with them the ground situation in the state and the government's response.
Congress sources said the party has decided to downplay the criticism of the government over the Jammu and Kashmir situation especially after the home minister explained some strategic details of the operation that killed terrorist Burhan Wani. In a statement Sonia Gandhi said, "There can be no compromise on matters relating to National Security...Terrorism must be dealt with firmly."
She also expressed "deep anguish at the loss of innocent lives in the senseless violence in parts of J&K in the past few days," and said "the death of so many of our citizens and attack on security forces is very painful."
Omar Abdullah tweeted that the home minister had spoken to him and said his party "will play whatever role is required to help normalise the situation." The onus to ensure that lay on the state and central government he said.
"I told him that until security forces exercise maximum restraint & stop killing protesters... this vicious cycle of violence would not stop. Only after the lethal use of force ends can we begin to pull the valley back from the abyss.." Mr Abdullah tweeted.

23 killed in Kashmir following protests over Burhan Wani encounter

Nawaz Sharif expresses 'deep shock' over Burhan Wani's killing

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has deplored "excessive" force against civilians in the latest wave of violence in the Valley while expressing "deep shock" over the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.

Sharif, who recently returned from London after an open-heart surgery, came out with a late night statement condemning the action of Indian security forces in Kashmir.

"The Prime Minister of Pakistan has expressed his deep shock at the killing of Kashmiri leader Burhan Wani and many other civilians by the Indian military and paramilitary forces," Sharif's office said in the statement.

The Prime Minister said it was "deplorable that excessive and unlawful force was used against the civilians" who were protesting against the killing of Wani.

"Oppressive measures such as these cannot deter the valiant people of Jammu and Kashmir from their demand of exercising their right to self-determination in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions," he said.

Expressing concern over the detention of Kashmiri separatist leaders, Sharif said India should fulfil its human rights obligations as well as its commitments under the United Nations Security Council resolutions. - PTI
