Maharashtra council polls: BJP win marketed on demonetisation, but statistics are being twisted

Now that the results of the municipal councils and town panchayats are out, a lot of political meanings can be found in them.

For instance, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the maximum number of councils, seats, and even directly elected presidents, which shows BJP’s demonetised policy as being accepted by the people. This analysis falls by the wayside when the number of such gains are smaller than the victories of the BJP, Congress, and NCP added up — they all have opposed demonetisation.

BJP could well use this as a kind of public opinion in favour of demonetisation, a kind of a mini-referendum in a major state ruled by it. But that would be twisting the statistics, seeking comfort in the fact that it has not won the majority of the council and majority of councillors. By glossing over it, a perception would be sought to be conveyed that despite hardships of not getting speedy replacement of currencies which are now not legal tender.

Note ban: It’s a lonely miserable life for the unloved Rs 2,000

I am a newly born Rs 2,000 note and I feel as rejected as one of those potential brides on display. You know, when the other side ticks the boxes after having met you and checked you over and then goes home and sends a message saying, oops, nii..ii.ce but sorry, something is lacking.

Ignored?Ignored?

Something to do with my colour so there is clearly racial prejudice involved. I just don’t look like real money, more like I was sort of toy money in one of those shelves with "Age 6 and above" written on me. Of all the colours in the world who pointed to this garish, gaudy option and said, aaha, perfect complexion for this note, let's go on for a bit. Hardly fair and handsome.

Spawned in a crucible of confusion and conceived more by mistake than intent I have realised that I am an unloved offspring and no one chucks me under the chin or ruffles my hair or shows me off.

I don’t think people hate me, they just don’t like me. I don’t spark affection, more like one of those babies on a plane crying through the flight. Nuisance value.

I am now noticing people shy away from me.

Maurya said since his party is pro-worker, they have a lot of aspirations and expectations.

"As we have true democracy in the party it is not expected that an MLA's son will end up being an MLA or an MP's son will become an MP," he said, adding any worker can aspire to reach any of the posts in his party.

"There are too many applications for tickets for the coming polls, but I believe that disciplined BJP workers will accept all decisions the day they are taken," he said.
